Detroit Resurrected: To Bankruptcy and Back

Detroit Resurrected: To Bankruptcy and Back
By:"Nathan Bomey"
Published on 2016-04-25 by W. W. Norton & Company

What happens when an iconic American city goes broke? At exactly 4:06 p.m. on July 18, 2013, the city of Detroit filed for bankruptcy. It was the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history—the Motor City had finally hit rock bottom. But what led to that fateful day, and how did the city survive the perilous months that followed? In Detroit Resurrected, Nathan Bomey delivers the inside story of the fight to save Detroit against impossible odds. Bomey, who covered the bankruptcy for the Detroit Free Press, provides a gripping account of the tremendous clash between lawyers, judges, bankers, union leaders, politicians, philanthropists, and the people of Detroit themselves. The battle to rescue this iconic city pulled together those who believed in its future—despite their differences. Help came in the form of Republican governor Rick Snyder, a technocrat who famously called himself “one tough nerd”; emergency manager Kevyn Orr, a sharp-shooting lawyer and “yellow-dog Democrat”; and judges Steven Rhodes and Gerald Rosen, the key architects of the grand bargain that would give the city a second chance at life. Detroit had a long way to go. Facing a legacy of broken promises, the city had to seek unprecedented sacrifices from retirees and union leaders, who fought for their pensions and benefits. It had to confront the consequences of years of municipal corruption while warding off Wall Street bond insurers who demanded their money back. And it had to consider liquidating the Detroit Institute of Arts, whose world-class collection became an object of desire for the city’s numerous creditors. In a tight, suspenseful narrative, Detroit Resurrected reveals the tricky path to rescuing the city from $18 billion in debt and giving new hope to its citizens. Based on hundreds of exclusive interviews, insider sources, and thousands of records, Detroit Resurrected gives a sweeping account of financial ruin, backroom intrigue, and political rebirth in the struggle to reinvent one of America’s iconic cities.

Free for All?

Free for All?
By:"Joseph P. Newhouse","Rand Corporation. Insurance Experiment Group"
Published on 1993-01 by Harvard University Press

In the most important health insurance study ever conducted researchers at the RAND Corporation devised all experiment to address two key questions in health care financing: how much more medical care will people use if it is provided free of charge, and what are the consequences for their health? For three- or five-year periods the experiment measured both use and health outcomes in populations carefully selected to be representative of both urban and rural regions throughout the United States. Participants were enrolled in a range of insurance plans requiring different levels of copayment for medical care, from zero to 95 percent. The researchers found that in plans that reimbursed a higher proportion of the bill, patients used substantially more services - indeed, those who paid nothing used 40 percent more services than those required to pay a high deductible - but the effect on the health of the average person was negligible. In addition, participants who were assigned at random to a well-established health maintenance organization used hospitals substantially less than those in the fee-for-service system, again with no measurable effect on the health of the average person. This book collects in one place for the first time results previously dispersed through many journals over many years. Drawing comprehensive, coherent conclusions from an immense amount of data, it is destined to be a classic work serving as an invaluable reference for all those concerned with health care policy - health service researchers, policymakers in both the public and the private sectors, and students.

Neuropsychology for Psychologists, Health Care Professionals, and Attorneys, Third Edition

Neuropsychology for Psychologists, Health Care Professionals, and Attorneys, Third Edition
By:"Robert J. Sbordone","Ronald E. Saul","Arnold D. Purisch"
Published on 2007-06-21 by CRC Press

Extensively revised and expanded, this third edition of Neuropsychology for Psychologists, Health Care Professionals, and Attorneys provides a clear, concise, and comprehensive discussion of neuropsychology, outlining its purpose, use, and historical development. It covers the anatomy of the brain, a wide variety of neurobehavioral disorders, comprehensive neuropsychological examinations, ecological validity, and the strengths and limitations of many widely used neuropsychological and diagnostic tests. Maintaining a high degree of detail and sophistication, this book enables an in-depth comprehension of the topic even by those with no prior knowledge in this area. Beginning with a definition and overview of neuropsychology and the role of the neuropsychologist, this third edition expands the section on neuroanatomy to describe subcortical and ganglionic structures, cerebellum and white fiber tracts, and the pathophysiology of neurobehabehavioral disorders. It covers mild and severe traumatic brain injuries, postconcussion syndrome, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), frontal lobe disorders, executive dysfunction, and seizure disorders. The authors introduce new findings on age-related cognitive changes, neuropsychological and physiological correlates of PTSD, Alzheimer's and late onset dementia. New chapters include malingering of neuropsychological deficits and deception, the limitations of neuropsychological tests, and how to critique the interpretation of neuropsychological test data and reports. Emphasizing a systematic approach to neuropsychological testing and assessment, this book evaluates a wide range of neuropsychological and neurodiagnostic tests in terms of their strengths, limitations, validity, and reliability. It critically examines different methods of test scoring and interpretation discussing the ecological validity of neuropsychological testing and the extent to which neuropsychological tests can detect neurobehavioral deficits and brain damage. The author provides numerous illustrative case studies and six sample medico-legal reports along with three appendices offering a glossary of terms, a list of widely prescribed medications, and a quick-reference summary of the tests detailed in the book.

In this meditation on his profession, Dershowitz writes about life, law, and the opportunities that young lawyers have to do good and do well at the same time.We live in an age of growing dissatisfaction with law as a career, which ironically comes at a time of unprecedented wealth for many lawyers. Dershowitz addresses this paradox, as well as the uncomfortable reality of working hard for clients who are often without many redeeming qualities. Published on 2005 by

Home security is an essential part of owning a home. We all need to feel safe while we're at home as well as confident when we go out that burglars cannot get in. However, many homes are surprisingly easy to break into and in many cases burglars don't even have to use force. There is a huge amount that householders could do to keep their homes secure. This highly informative and practical book shows you how to protect your home and possessions without having to spend a fortune on elaborate security systems. The book starts with a chapter on what makes crime happen and the principles of crime prevention. The chapters that follow deal with boundaries, access, door and window security, garden security, lighting for both house and garden and electronic systems. A chapter on defensive plants explains how planting a dense, thorny hedge is a good way to deter intruders.
